What's new in Universal Display Magnet
Every release, newest first.
Universal Display Magnet 0.4.1 is a small update, and the first one to arrive through the app.
- Three Macs per license: Settings → License now says what your license covers: three active installations, one for each Mac. It said two before. Every language is updated.
- Delivered by the app: if you have 0.4.0, the app finds this version by itself, shows what's new, then downloads, verifies and installs it and restarts. Your activation carries over.
Universal Display Magnet 0.4.0 updates itself.
- In-app updates: once a day the app looks for a new version. When one is out, it shows what's new, then downloads, verifies and installs it and restarts. Your activation carries over.
- Settings → Updates: check automatically, download and install automatically, or check now, and see when the app last checked.
- Gentle reminders: an update found in the background shows in the window and in the menu bar panel.
- Licensed downloads: updates need an activated license. The app sends it only to universaldisplaymagnet.app, which confirms it with Polar.
- Install 0.4.0 once by hand: 0.3.1 and older open the download page instead; from 0.4.0 on, updates install themselves.
- Watch every shortcut first: each Scrolling Windows shortcut plays a short looping preview on the practice desktop, and Window Snapping shows what each action does in a looping preview too.
- Recording shortcuts: works reliably now, even for combinations another shortcut already uses, and arrows and special keys get readable names.
- Window Snapping fits on screen: the shortcuts and menu sit beside the preview, and Activity moves below Settings in the sidebar.
- Updates: the app checks universaldisplaymagnet.app once a day and opens the download page when a new version is out.
- New icon: four blocks in the app icon, with a matching mark in the menu bar.
Universal Display Magnet 0.3.0 adds Scrolling Windows.
- Scrolling Windows: turn it on and every window becomes a column on a strip that runs past the edges of the screen. Open another app and it slides in beside the one you're using. Off until you turn it on.
- Widths, stacks and tabs: cycle a column through preset widths, stack windows in one column, or show a stack as tabs.
- Grid tiling: tile a display's windows in a grid instead, per display; displays can also be left alone.
- Overview and gestures: hold ⌃⌥ to see the whole strip and drag columns to reorder them, or swipe with three or four fingers to scroll it.
- A shortcut for everything: every action has a key binding, and a tour shows one feature at a time on a practice desktop.
- License: activate with the key from your purchase. One license covers three Macs, and the app keeps working offline for up to seven days.
- Multiple Macs: Macs & Sync shows the other Mac's app and macOS version, and warns when the two apps differ.
Universal Display Magnet 0.2.5 comes as one download for every Mac.
- One app for every Mac: the same download now runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
- Opens normally: the app is signed and notarized by Apple.
Universal Display Magnet 0.2.4 speaks your language: the whole app is translated into 17 languages besides English.
- Languages: Čeština, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Magyar, Nederlands, Polski, Português (Brasil), Svenska, Türkçe, Русский, Українська, 日本語, 한국어, 简体中文 and 繁體中文, including the menus, alerts, the Activity log and the permission prompts.
- Settings → Language: the app follows your Mac's language by default; pick another one there and restart the app to switch.
- Lighter autosaves: window positions are only captured again when something on screen actually moved, and still at least every 10 minutes and always before the Mac sleeps.
- Less work in the background: the menu bar icon, the app menus and the menu bar panel only redraw what changed, closed windows are released until you open them again, and Activity stops following the log while it's hidden.
- About page: the version, build and macOS version with Copy Version Info, release notes, a privacy summary and credits.
- Signed and notarized by Apple: the app opens normally after you download it. No feature changes.
- Lives in the menu bar: closing the window removes the Dock icon while shortcuts, snapping, sync, wake and Activity keep working. Opening it again brings the Dock icon and menus back.
- Quiet at login: a launch at login starts in the menu bar only.
- Reset Universal Control: restarts Universal Control on this Mac and on your other Mac, then puts your arrangement back if Universal Control lost it.
- Activity: a new page that explains, in plain words, what Universal Control does between your Macs.
Universal Display Magnet 0.1.0 is the first release: snap your monitors together, arrange Universal Control across your Macs, and get every window back to its monitor and Desktop.
